1657 Rare PEARL BIBLE Printed by John Field Holy Bible Contayning the Old and New Testaments Newly Translated
The Holy Bible Contayning the Old and New Testaments Newly Translated out of Ye Originall Tongues and with Ye Former Translations diligently compared and revised. London. Printed by John Feild one of his Highnes’s Printers, 1657. 12mo. 19th. C. Full, textured, panelled calf professional binding, ribbed gilt spine, aeg, marbled eps. Engraved Old Testament title page with central title panel within border panels featuring Moses, King David and the Apostles together with a New Testament title page within red panels and a typographic decorative border. Printer’s name misspelt as is usual.
The text block has been closely cropped and, at some points, with a tiny loss of the original red margins but no loss of text, this probably occurred during the 19th.C. rebinding. This copy features the newly introduced Perl font and became known as the ‘Pearl Bible’ and was one of two ‘pocket-sized’ editions that became available at this time.
Apart from the various point referred to in the description, this is generally a very well preserved copy of this edition of the Bible in a later fine binding.
Red-ruled: Bibles that are ruled in red are more beautiful in appearance and more desirable.
Only a small fraction of Bibles (around 10%) contain red ruling.
