Description
Please check out my other auctions for more similar manuscript books as well.A beautiful manuscript, dated 1769, titled Collection d'Hymnes et de Proses Choises. Harkening back to the medieval Book of Hours, these manuscript hymns and poetry are a Christian devotional, with a Latin passage on the verso (left-side), and a French passage on the recto (right).
One hundred and three pages are provided in manuscript (title page, and "102" paginated pages). Many of the passages relate to the Fetes de l"Annee, but are not limited to them. You'll find passages for Pentecost, Easter, various Saint's days, etc.. A preponderance of the readings are specific to the period surrounding Jesus' death and resurrection.
The beautiful "Dutch-Gilt" pastedowns are very similar to those attributed to Joseph Friederich Leopold of Augsburg (To Brighten Things Up, p.18, Schmoller, 2008).
