WELCOME TO SALLY’S DIARIES:I usually like to list several diaries a week but have been so busy with my Diary Discoveries podcast that I’ve fallen behind in my listings. If you like diaries and the wonderful stories they tell then try out my podcast as I share different diaries and their original stories from diaries in my personal collection. You can find it on any of the podcast venues.
Up for auction today is an 1840’s handwritten autograph book that originally belonged to a woman by the name of Phoebe. The name Philippine is written on the first page engraving, so I don’t know if they are the same woman or not but all of pieces are addressed to Phoebe. There are 30 handwritten sentiments inside, 6 engravings and two fabulous drawings. All of them are from New York. I don’t have a last name for Phoebe. I also found a few pieces of ephemera between the pages and a cdv photo of an elderly woman with the photographer’s name printed on the back being T. J. Davis of Morristown N.J.
The album is in poor shape. The front and back covers are loose from the binding as are some of the pages but all is accounted for. There is a good deal of foxing, especially on the engravings. It really needs some archival repair. The album measures about 6” x 7 1/2”.
