It is an excellent representation of the illustrative continuance in American Indian art from the 1940's school of painting developed at the American Indian Institute of Art , as it was in the l970's. Antoine is a self taught artist and has preserved the stories of the Sac and Fox as described by his grandfather, Mo-gi-We-mi-Ko. Printed by the Ni-Wo-di-Hi Gallery in Austin, TX.
THE CHALLENGE, Limited edition lithograph, # 983 OF 3000, signed in pencil by Antowone Warrior. In 1961 Warrior attended the second Indian art seminar hosted by the University of Arizona and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. Among the other students at the seminar was Fritz Scholder. Two distinguished artists whom have taken wholly different paths in preserving their traditions. In 1978 Warrior's painting Storyteller was the winner of the Wolf Robe Hunt Award for the best traditional style Native American painting at the 33rd Annual Indian Artist'
s Exhibition at the Philbrook Art Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Warrior is adamant in the accurate depiction of tribal ways, and his paintings are among the permanent collections at the Smithsonian and Philbrook Museums. Antowine Warrior is best known for his water color paintings that are classics of the Plains Indian style. His craftsmanship also extends to traditional beadwork and sculpture. This print is in MINT condition. There is no damage or ageing on the artwork. The colors are nice and bold. It has remained under glass since it was purchased and it has not been reframed either.
