Description

Up for sale is this lovely antique commonplace/friendship book belonging to one Harriet H. Stone.  The book contains a variety of poems, excerpts, etc.  It has entries from Berkshire, East Berkshire, and St. Albans, so it is most likely from Vermont.  Only about 1/3 of the leaves have handwritten entries.  There are approximately 17 pages of handwritten content on 16 leaves.  One of the poems has a lovely botanical folk art water color painting and there is another original cut out watercolor painting which is tucked between the pages.  About 30 of the leaves are completely blank.  The blank pages are mixed between the pages with content.  Two of the pages with writing appear before the title page.  The book is illustrated with 5 black and white engravings. The leather covers only have some light scuffing and wear.  One of the first page gatherings juts out a little further than the rest, it is most likely the result of some kind of amateur repair.  There is a little evidence of a small price tag removal to the front fep.  The binding is sound.  The interior pages are lightly toned from age with some occasional foxing, soiling & grubbiness.  Some pages have a bit of fading to the ink.  A few pages may have a small chip or tear, creased page corner, light wrinkle, etc.  Most of the entries are dated to the late 1830's.  The book measures approximately 7 3/4 inches by 6 inches.  All in all a really wonderful old friendship journal.  Please look at all of the photos to further note the condition.
