    Description

Up for offer is this awesome and seldom seen original WWI war poster, promoting the sale of US Government "War Savings Stamps."
This great poster is essentially a work of fine artistry, with artwork by the esteemed William Balfour Ker. Like so many artists of the time, who offered their services and artwork in support of the The Great War, Balfour Ker was a professional, commercial, artist, and it certainly shows in his artwork. (Side note: Balfour Ker died in 1918, and this very well may have been pne of his last pieces of artwork. Additionally, he was keenly interested in depicting issues of class struggle and poverty, which he did with great aplomb. The many immigrant figures shown in this particular poster, are portrayed with great pride and elegance by Balfour Ker.)
This intriguing poster was certainly aimed at the larger population centers like New York, New Jersey, Chicago, etc., where many immigrants and new Citizens flocked to, mainly coming from the very countries now engulfed in the "war to end all wars". It promotes the purchasing of "War Savings Stamps", via the US Treasury, as a way to directly aid and fund US troops "over there." The queue is full many different ethnicities, all willing to help the war effort, with their dollars and cents. Notice the great image of Uncle Sam in the "WSS" window. And the nice little detail of the kid waving the American flag. Poster art at it's finest, where so much is said with so little verbiage. A really powerful image.
Poster is in essentially perfect, mint, condition. It has been professionally and archivally mounted on linen, to preserve and maintain the paper's integrity. This is a very high quality linen-mounting. The colors are strong and bright; no sun fading. Measures 30.5 x 40". This poster was printed by the Strobridge Litho. Co., which put out many posters for the US Government during WWI. Their lithography process was first-rate, producing deep, rich, images. Poster is in remarkable condition, dating to 1918! (Please note: there exists much erroneous information floating around about WWI and WWII posters, by collectors with very limited experience and knowledge in the field. The denotation "Reproduced by Strobridge", does not connote a modern, contemporary, copy, but rather that the Storbridge Litho. Co reproduced the original artwork, by Balfour Ker or any other various artist, as a period poster.)
If you like WWI war posters, or US propaganda posters in general, or collect WWI militaria, this is one for you. Would look great displayed as is, or expertly framed (any good quality frame shop will be familiar with how to trim the excess linen, and frame only the image). This would look great as a back-drop in one's war room, or is ever subtly elegant enough for one's living room or office.
Thanks for looking. This will need to ship in a large poster rolling tube.
