Ge'ez
language is one of the
Semitic
languages spoken in
Ethiopia
in the past; and probably originated from 2 sources: The
Sabaean
language originated in
Southern Yemen
few centuries
B.C
; and represents an old
Arabic Semitic
language spoken by the famous biblical
Queen of Sheba
. The
Ge’ez
language is a
combination
of the two; the
Semitic
and the old
Ethiopian
languages. It was vanished with time and
nowadays
is only used in biblical and Christian Orthodox schools in old Ethiopia.  What you see here is an old
Gospel
of
Saint John
on vellum, calf or goat skin with bold black and red ink. The red ink is usually reserved for the name of
God
or
Saints
. An expertise in Ethiopian Manuscripts has said:

Gospel of John manuscripts are generally of
particular interest
to Christian scholars.
But they are among the most frequently copied books in the Ethiopian tradition.
Nevertheless, this manuscript has
some items of special interest
:
1. It is a little bit old:
18th
century and perhaps
17th
century.
2. This manuscript mentions the
name of the owner
,
Haile Yesus
.
3.
Most especially
, at the end of this manuscript there are some
interesting
extra notes. One of them is a
canon list
, that is, a list of the books of the Ethiopian bible. These sorts of canon lists are very
interesting to scholars because Ethiopia's list of biblical books is unique among the Christian tradition”
.
Some scripts vanished with years; dirt and heavy foxing exist as well but the
text is not seriously affected
. It is formed of
70
leaves with
140
pages. The leaves are bound with a
wooden cover
formed of 2 carved wood pieces attached with thread and leather. It measures 15.0 cm x 12.0 cm X 5.0 cm.
