Very Nice & Bold Large WWI PATRIOTIC POSTER, SALVATION ARMY HOME SERVICE RELIEF FUND
DESCRIPTION:
THIS IS A SCARCE SALVATION ARMY POSTER for a home relief fund drive. Bright red and very striking. Nice color and bold Salvation Army logo.
Specifically, this one advertises a HOME RELIEF FUND, probably for veterans coming home. Many could not find jobs after the war and there was a great deal of poverty and hunger among veterans. Many even resorted to violence and marches, etc. for better conditions and assistance.
This is a great patriotic poster intended to stir the patriotic spirit and get support for the trooops.
This one was "published by the Libbie Printing Co, 242 Dover St., Boston. On the bottom someone wrote 1920 in handwriting. ON THE BACK IS A VERY RARE, VERY UNUSUAL HAND WRITTEN NOTE: "This with another like it was given me by a Salvation Army woman. I recall a number during the Drive May 10 to 20 extended 1920". Very nice to have the unusual endorsement.
It will literally go anywhere and with anything.
Very patriotic and captures THE COOPERATIVE "work together" spirit of the war effort, including the years of recovery following the war. THIS WOULD LOOK REALLY NICE IN A SALVATION ARMY OFFICE OR MEETING HALL !!!
Posters were primarily printed as reminders, and were generally pasted on walls, or  put in windows
. Often the ones we see now were "proofs" prepared by the printer before the run was started. Or, like in this case, were kept as souvenirs by whoever put them up. The ones that were used obviously took a lot of abuse and wear and did not survive long. This one was obviously kept as souvenir, accounting for its survival.
THIS ONE IS IN GENERALLY GOOD CONDITION FOR ITS AGE AND CONSIDERING HOW THIN THE PAPER IS, AND MAKES A GREAT DISPLAY ITEM. Has a couple of relatively small tears in the center where it was folded. They could be  repaired if desired, although I don't think they would show too badly if framed.

crisp. Good
overall, especially considering that these posters were never intended to last forever when printed. OVER 100 YEARS OLD NOW !!
