SHAPE TO REFLECT ON THE MISSION - TO STOP TERRORISM
    Advanced Extremely High Frequency
(AEHF) is a US military communications system whose space component consists of three geostationary satellites plus a possible on-orbit spare. Formerly known as 'Milstar III', it is the successor to the currently-operational Milstar system.
The satellites provide a large number of
    spot beams
towards Earth, and when the constellation is finished the satellites will be also able to communicate with one another directly. The
    transmissions
are designed to be jam- and intercept-resistant, incorporating frequency-hopping and antennae capable of being configured to provide
    antenna nulls
in the direction of identified jamming sources. There are three AEHF
    communication services
: a new one providing data rates up to 8.192 Mbit/s per user, and the previous Milstar Low Data Rate (LDR) services (75 – 2400 bits per second) and Milstar Medium Data Rate (MDR) services (4.8 kbit/s – 1.544 Mbit/s).

The initial contract for the AEHF system was awarded in November 2001 to
    Lockheed Martin
    Space Systems and
    Northrop Grumman
Space Technology to begin the System Development and Demonstration phase. This phase will deploy three satellites and a mission control segment. The MILSATCOM Program Office of the
    United States Air Force
    Space and Missile Systems Center
is the AEHF contract manager. The first launch is planned for 10 AUG 2010. It will launch from Cape Canaveral AFS, Florida aboard a ULA Atlas V rocket.
