    Description
This listing is for one original pre-World War I home front poster,
“For Active Service Join the U.S. Marines.
” This is a post office
    “hanger,
” a sturdier poster on heavier paper, with metal stiffeners on the top and bottom, and a loop for hanging it on the wall. The graphics are by Sidney Riesenberg and dated 1913

before the war started in Europe.
    "
    Sidney Harry Riesenberg (12 December 1885 – 11 October 1971)
was born in 1885 in Chicago. He was educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was recognized for his compositions in oil. He moved to Yonkers in 1905 where he began his career as a professional illustrator. One of Riesenberg's most well known works is his 1918 World War I-era poster,
    Over the Top for You
, which illustrates a young doughboy clutching the American flag. With its bold illustration and concise text, like many war posters of the time,
    Over the Top for You
encouraged the public to support its military by purchasing liberty loans. Among other posters, it was selected to display in the Smithsonian American Art Museum under the exhibit, "Over the Top: American Posters from World War I.”

Very good antique condition. Some flecks of foxing, toning, and one small hole along the edge.
    This poster has been rolled.
    Dimensions:
    18

    x 25.75"
    Weight: 2.5 oz
A word about these very old (100+ years) posters: these are from a private collection, but they have never been restored, framed, or altered. Most are in the condition they were in when they were taken down the day after World War 1 ended, rolled, and stored away. With a few exceptions, their condition is only antique Good, meaning they are complete, with good graphics and color, but showing signs of much handling and considerable age. These posters were ephemera

they were never meant to last long after the guns fell silent. Please keep this in mind when buying old paper items such as these.
