I bought these back in 2004 at an estate sale in Bristol, VA. It was hanging on the wall. I don’t even know if the sellers knew what it is.Outer frame measurements are 12 1/“ wide x 15 5/8” tall.
Enlistment certificate measurements ( the exposed portion under glass) are 10 5/8” wide x 14 1/8” tall.
Enlistment certificate has , “Illustrated Postal Card & Nov. Co. NY” on bottom edge ( see last photo).
Promotion certificate measurements ( second document in photos) are 20 1/2” wide x 8” tall.
Enlistment Certificate has great color and no folds or tares.
Promotion certificate fits in paper pocket on back. The tares were from when it was being hung from a nail. The exposed portion would catch the nail.
Original 1918 Enlistment document / lithograph commemorating entering service in the First World War. Dated 1918, was issued to “William M. Schliph”. Willian signed it on September-18-1918.
Also, 19 of his “Comrades in Arms” signed in bottom of document.
The image was drawn and designed by “Dan Smith”, a famous illustrator who published in newspapers and magazines and also designed memorable patriotic posters from WWI through the early 1930s. Smith contributed several other document/poster designs to the war effort in 1917 & 1918.
The promotion to rank of Corporal Certificate is also signed by William and Major Gaines on December 14, 1918.
This certificate is discolored with 2 tares on side and corner fold.
The frame has dome chipped paint on lower corner ( see photos).
The glass is complete with no cracks.
