Here is a really interesting book that I recently acquired! It dates from 1748, and I am pleased to say it is the oldest book I have listed in my shop! It is a yearly compilation of Scots Magazine copyright 1748. Inside is written an inscription by the owner of 1757 with his name. Great book of Scottish history!
The book itself has split in half but fortunately, the pages are not loosened and are still sown tightly together. As far as I can see, the book is complete except for the last four or five pages which look like they were cut out or removed. I know some of these compilations had maps so maybe that is what was removed? It might be worth getting rebound, or you can just enjoy it as is!
One whole section of the book has darkened pages as shown.
It is fascinating reading! There are sections about caring for and feeding newborns, small pox outbreaks and how to treat them, various kings, a lot about locust plagues which must have been a major issue that year, religious sections and poetry, deaths and causes of deaths and weather statistics. It is the full year for 1748.
Incredible that this book somehow survived nearly 275 years!
