Description
For sale is this authentic complete medieval aged Indian Palm Leaf Manuscript. This incredible “pseudo-book” of sorts is written in Tamil — with the letters almost appearing to have been carved into the leaf sections that form the “leaves” or “pages”. As a “Palm Leaf Manuscript”, the pages to this piece are made by taking palm leaves, drying them, cutting them to shape, and the forming pages out of them. Once inscribed, these leaves were then holed, and attached to wooden “covers”, or end plates, to keep the work together. Often they were then tied together as a bunch to keep the full work bound. Wikipedia provides the following of Palm Leaf Manuscripts:“The text in palm leaf manuscripts was inscribed with a knife pen on rectangular cut and cured palm leaf sheets; colourings were then applied to the surface and wiped off, leaving the ink in the incised grooves. Each sheet typically had a hole through which a string could pass, and with these the sheets were tied together with a string to bind like a book. A palm leaf text thus created would typically last between a few decades and about 600 years before it decayed due to dampness, insect activity, mold and fragility. Thus the document had to be copied onto new sets of dried palm leaves.[2] The oldest surviving palm leaf Indian manuscripts have been found in colder, drier climates such as in parts of Nepal, Tibet and central Asia, the source of 1st-millennium CE manuscripts.”
This set is complete, and in very good condition given the age. You can expect some wear, however. Some of the leaves have tears, or frail places on them. There might be small chips. There is some staining, particularly to the covers, but also to the leaves in places. Overall i rank them as very high in condition. After much research, I personally estimate this work to be circa 1400-1600’s. Of course, I am no expert, so this is only my personal non-expert opinion based off what I have read online. It is not a guarantee or promised era of production, but only my personal estimate of their age. It is sold as is, with no guarantee of age. Again, this is just my non professional estimate based off of research, and not a guaranteed date. Provenance: purchased from a private collection of Indian antiques and collectibles as part of a collection of 4 pieces. These are extremely hard to come by. Now I am able to offer these incredible pieces at a wholesale pricing! Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to own a piece of manuscript history! This listing is for the EXACT piece in the photo! Don’t pass it up!
Note: The number in the title is the rough number of leaves that make up this particular manuscript.
