Description
Studio Fallente Laborem Original Vellum Charter for the Coat of Arms, London, England dated June 11, 1807.The London Institution
Hand written and painted with Coat of Arms on vellum.
Established 1806, closed 1912
Measures 17 ½” wide x 22” tall.
Frame is 23 1/2" wide x 27 3/4"tall.
The Institution was established on Jan 18, 1806, in the house of Sir William Clayton (Lord Mayor of London in the time of Charles II), at 8 Old Jewry in the City of London at an annual rent of £350. It was modelled on the Royal Institution in London's West End. By Jan 21, 1807, a Royal Charter for the "London Institution for the Promotion of Literature and Useful Knowledge" had been drafted. This 2nd charter drafted for the coat of arms for this institution was signed and sealed on June 11, 1807 by the three notable King of Arms, Isaac Heard Garter, George Harrison Clarenceux and Ralph Bigland Norroy. The Institution moved into premises at Finsbury Circus in 1815. It eventually closed in 1912 and the buildings were used for the University of London until their demolition in 1936. There is quite a bit of information available on the internet for this historic college.
There is additional writing on the back that would be in the upper left corner and there appears to be more writing in the upper right corner that may be obscured, but I have not removed the document from the frame.
There is a revenue stamp at the left side of the document for 1 Pound 10 Shillings.
This would be the second charter written for this college as it was introduced in 1806 with the first charter written in Jan 1807 that detailed the location and the assigned staff and individuals to operate the college. There is documentation available on-line for the wording of that charter, but I am not sure the 1st charter still exists. I could not find it in the London archives.
I am not quite sure how this document eventually ended up in California, USA, but here it is!
There is some significant water damage to the document on both the left and right sides at the upper edges graduating down to the middle edges of the document. Much of the text on the edges is obscured by this damage, but can still be seen and read with the use of a black (ultraviolet) light. I have been able to decipher all of the text with the exception of just a few words.
Condition: Complete with water damage to left and right sides of document affecting appearance. 75% legible. 98% legible under UV light. Document is stable. Framed. Please view pictures provided to make your own determination on condition. I can provide additional pictures if requested.
This document has historical significance to the London, England Universities as well as England's history of education.
Rare to find an original coat of arms charter for a prestigious University of that day.
Ask questions if you have them, I will do my best to answer.
A truly rare piece of history!
