The author of "The Shiny Night" was born and brought up in western Mercia where her ancestors have lived since the Norman Conquest. In the Vale Royal, the lovely valley the shape of a bird's wing, where "The Shiny Night" is laid she spent her childhood, unhampered by school for her father believed that they were death to the feminine personality.
Not far from her home was the Image House adorned with stone effigies of the squire, the sheriff, the judge, the game keeper and the other enemies of the Seth Shone of the story who was a mighty poacher in his day. The grandson of Seth still lives in the Image House and still believes with his fathers that the way to destroy one's enemy is to make his image in stone, dough or clay.
Now Miss Tunstall lives and writes in London but she frequently returns to Mercia and to the little village of her childhood to attend services at Clock Abbot Church with its ancient mullioned windows almost destroyed by the death-watch beetle and to look at the faces that stand in a row above the Image House.
    Within This Present
    By Margaret Ayer Barnes
Sally belonged to the sheltered world of Chicago's proper rich-a world of debutante balls, family approved courtships and private chic schools. Alan was part of this world. Their love was the perfect climax of a totally beautiful life. — But the fairy tale ended there. It ended with a war that tore them apart, with a Depression that brought the mightiest down to earth. For Sally, it exploded with Maisie, a stunning shameless girl who wanted Alan-and didn't give a damn about society's rules.
Writer portrays the story of life in the two decades of the early 20th century from persons who lived in this period-their thoughts, conversations and ideas that they became excited about.
