ARTIST BIOGRAPHY/STATEMENT
My name is Duke Wassaja Sine. I am half Yavapai, half San Carlos Apache, born in 1955. I am also a second-generation artist; my father David V. Sine is a self-taught, accomplished artist himself. As we were growing, he taught us the basics of art, the values of nature, respect for our Apache heritage and traditions. Throughout my life, I've tried to interpret themes into my own art.
I am an alumni of the Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, N.M. (1969-1973). I.A.I.A has always been a melting-pot of various tribes from throughout America. Students had a chance to exchange ideas, and learn about different cultures. We were taught by the masters of traditional and contemporary Indian Art, as well as learning about all the different art mediums possible.
Over the past fifteen years as a full-time artist, I've been developing my own distinct style using watercolors, of mix medium works on paper. I've tried to interpret the ceremonial, historical and social aspects of the Apache culture. I like to use fine line and detail in my work, with sweeping, bright background colors that set the mood of each piece. My paintings are not just "pretty pictures," but each one has its own story, and is thought out well before hand. With each new painting or drawing, I am constantly striving to learn and improve. My style has developed from a respect for traditional Indian art as well as a vision toward the future of Indian art.
